Electronics III: The Downfall of Mbox II

A few months ago...

It was a sunny day in San Francisco. I walked up to the doorstep with glee in my heart, as I thought of all the possibilities an Mbox could bring. The door opened and I was greeted with an Mbox II. I threw my money, snagged the interface, and frolicked down the street.

Present day

I hate this thing. Several times, I've held a hammer over it with malicious intent, contemplating what my life would be like if I'd never even heard of an Mbox before.

Here is a website I visited to find an update for the Mbox firmware.

Mbox 2 - Firmware Update Downloads

One of the possible problems that I became aware of, was that the firmware update may have been interrupted during the update process. I attempted to download the update, but it required a Power PC. There was a small problem with that; Power PCs went extinct a while ago. They're dead. They aren't coming back. Goodbye Power PC. So I tried to plug the Mbox into a PC, instead of a Mac. No dice.

So maybe the firmware isn't the problem. I held the hammer over the Mbox again.

Next up; maybe it's an electrical issue. I opened it up with some effort to find only the most complicated circuit board I've ever seen. Sudhu helped me test the USB port. Everything seemed mostly fine. I searched for a schematic. I scoured every nook and cranny of the internet for a schematic, but apple likes to keep secrets. Without the schematic, I was up shit creek without a paddle.

Here are some photos of said creek:
Uh... what?

That damn D28....
After spending a few hours listening to continuity tones, I eventually realized that I had no clue how to fix this thing. I grabbed the hammer and hovered the nail remover over the circuit board for a few moments.

This project is not going well. I might have to just create a light emitting diode array; something more my speed.

For the Mbox, my plans are as follows:
